St. Jacobs Market District

In centuries past, a Mennonite farmer named Jacob C. Snyder pioneered the early development of the town originally known as “Jakobstettlel”.  Old order Mennonite families settled into the village, the first post office was opened in 1852, and the St. Jacobs Village became famous for its farmers market of the same name.  The Home Hardware stores across Canada today were founded in the village in a partnership with Walter J. Hachborn and Henry Sittler in 1948.  The Sittler family name reached new fame when the former Toronto Maple Leaf captain Darryl Sittler left the family farm for the ice rinks of the National Hockey League.

Within the village today, you will still find the horse and wagon teams the mennonites and Darryl’s grandfather Jake used as a milkman to deliver cream and milk door to door while working at the St. Jacobs Creamery.  In 2017, The Shantz family, which owns Mercedes Corporation, along with a group of shareholders, sold the Farmers market to the Schlegal family. The Shantz and Schlegel families shared friendship, common values and entrepreneurial roots within the region over the past century, and shared a common respect for the history and importance of the farmers market within the region.  The region is now known as the St. Jacob’s Market District.

St. Jacobs Farmers Market

Located a short fifteen minute drive from Uptown Waterloo, just past the North of Waterloo, is St. Jacob’s Village and its famous farmers market. With a visit to the largest year-round farmer's market in Canada, you will find generational farmers of agriculture, and the horse-drawn carriages of the Menonnite community who have historical roots in the region.  The market was established in April 1975 by eight farmers.  The owners merged a stockyard in Waterloo with a stockyard in Kitchener, and decades later a collection of local vendors are sharing their unique food, crafts, and gifts with the community. Fresh food, produce and natural ingredients are locally sourced from farmers and priced better than grocery and specialty stores. If you need the perfect cut of meat, or real natural dairy, you will find farmers who specialize in drug-free meat and dairy products.  A popular destination for residents of the town and nearby communities, the market has over a million visitors annually from all over the world.
